CPA Ontario conducts a program of financial support for Ontario Chartered Professional Accountant Members pursuing doctoral studies, which will prepare them for a career in teaching and research in governance, strategy and risk management, performance management, assurance, finance, financial accounting or taxation in Ontario. CPA Ontario provides up to $15,000 per year for each year of coursework, to a maximum of three years, to assist a CPA while they are pursuing their PhD.
To be considered for assistance under the program, the applicant must meet all of the criteria below:
- Be a member in good standing with CPA Ontario.
- Be accepted in a doctoral program and will be pursuing full-time coursework, which typically occurs in years one to three of a doctoral program. Applicants who have not yet been accepted into a doctoral program may still apply; however, funds will only be released after proof of acceptance into a recognized doctoral program is received. An applicant who is entering the fourth year of their doctoral program can contact CPA Ontario for further details regarding their eligibility.
- Demonstrate that the planned course of studies will prepare the applicant for a career in teaching and research in governance, strategy and risk management, performance management, assurance, finance, financial accounting, or taxation, and the studies include a concentration in one or more of these fields.
- Have one year of full-time teaching experience at the post-secondary institution level or have demonstrated the ability and interest in teaching.
Upon completion of all obligations under the doctoral studies support program agreement, a candidate shall receive the designation, “Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario Doctoral Fellow” (CPA Ontario Fellow) and shall be entitled cite the support program as “Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario Doctoral Fellowship”
