CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NATIONAL HONOUR ROLL RECIPIENTS

The National Honour Roll recognizes candidates who demonstrated academic excellence and exceptional abilities in the Common Final Exam. CPA Ontario congratulates the future leaders of the accounting profession who made the National Honour Roll.

Qianyu (Lawrence) Zhang

Lawrence Zhang obtained a Bachelor of Accounting and Financial Management and a Master of Accounting degree from the University of Waterloo. He is currently employed at MNP LLP in Mississauga. Lawrence thought he was in trouble when one of the partners called him into her office one day at work. She kept a straight face until she told him the good news: not only had he made the Honour Roll, he was both the 2018 Ontario Gold Medallist and the Canadian Gold Medallist. Lawrence is currently working in public audit and feels the CPA designation provides the foundation and skills to explore various opportunities and succeed in his chosen profession. Lawrence is also fluent in four languages. 

Mariam Amin

Born in Cairo, Egypt, Mariam Amin completed the Bachelor of Business Administration program, with distinction, at York University's Schulich School of Business. She is currently employed by Deloitte LLP in Toronto and sees herself continuing her work as a ​consultant, supporting clients through their strategic transformational projects and change initiatives. For Mariam — who is also a trained ballerina — a CPA designation is like a “stamp of trust.” She chose to become a CPA because it would equip her with the knowledge and skills to help her become a trusted professional in the business world.

Tatsuya Aoki

Tatsuya Aoki has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of British Columbia and a Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting from the University of Toronto. He is currently employed by Ernst & Young LLP in Toronto. Tatsuya’s love of accounting and auditing led him to pursue the CPA designation. Now he aims to enhance his technical knowledge with the goal of taking on an audit quality control role at the firm. Outside of work, Tatsuya admits to watching his favourite movies over and over, and has enjoyed the Harry Potter series at least 20 times.

Christopher (Chris) Ball

Chris Ball completed the Bachelor of Business Administration program at Wilfrid Laurier University. He is currently employed at Segal LLP in Toronto. Inspired by his parents’ strong work ethic, Chris worked hard preparing for the exam and describes making the Honour Roll as rewarding and fulfilling. Chris’ interests in taxation and valuation led him to pursue the CPA designation. He believes this designation will result in various career opportunities in these areas, where he plans to specialize. Chris is also a sports enthusiast who spends much of his time getting active or watching hockey games.

Thomas Budnick

Originally from Victoria, B.C., Thomas Budnick earned his Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Ottawa and has remained in the city to work at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Thomas decided to pursue a CPA designation with the goal of becoming internationally recognized as a highly-qualified professional and leader. Once established in the industry, he will direct his passion for teaching towards helping students overcome academic obstacles and achieve their career objectives.

Zoey Chau

After earning her Bachelor of Accounting and Financial Management and Master of Accounting degree at the University of Waterloo, Zoey Chau accepted a position at Lipton LLP in Toronto. Originally from Markham, this “world traveller” chose to become a CPA to take advantage of the limitless career options that accompany a CPA designation. In the future, she plans to specialize in either taxation or mergers and acquisitions.

Michael Chiumera

Michael Chiumera earned a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Accounting degree, both from Carleton University. He now works at Baker Tilly Ottawa. Michael is confident his CPA designation will allow him to pursue opportunities in many different industries because, as he puts it, “everyone needs an accountant.” Michael is currently exploring the possibility of a career in public accounting versus one in financing, and is inspired by people who tackle challenges that others are too afraid to touch.

Andrew Cooper

Andrew chose to become a CPA to further develop his professional competencies and to take advantage of the excellent career opportunities that come with this designation. His parents have been a main source of his inspiration, having taught him the values of hard work, perseverance and dedication. From a young age, Andrew always enjoyed reading — an interest that has remained over the years.

Nicholas (Nick) DiBiase

Raised in Burlington, Nick DiBiase completed Wilfrid Laurier University’s Bachelor of Business Administration program, then headed to Toronto to work at PwC LLP. Nick enjoys his current role and sees himself staying in the audit practice at PwC for the foreseeable future. In Nick’s opinion, a CPA designation is an all-encompassing designation, one that has helped him master the science of accounting and acquire non-technical skills that are relevant in the world of business. An avid golfer, Nick also spends “countless hours” playing the guitar.

Gregory (Paul) Edge

Being a CPA allows Paul to combine his analytical skills, passion for accounting, and his desire to make an impact within the Canadian and global business community. He sees himself moving towards a more advanced, specialized assurance role in the future. Paul is proud to have what may be the largest Lego Star Wars collection in his hometown of Cardinal, Ontario.

Devin believes the CPA designation is one of the most respected in the world and will give him the opportunity to work in any industry while pursuing a specialty that truly interests him. As a licensed Private Investigator, he recently joined the Forensic Services practice at PwC. Devin is an avid reader and admits that his favourite series is Harry Potter.

His current specialty is owner-managed businesses, where he enjoys collaborating with the people who are directly impacted by his work. Braden is a “die hard” Leafs fan and loves to play and watch hockey, golf, and baseball.

Bryon views his CPA designation as a doorway to various career opportunities. In the future, he is interested in looking at how data analytics can provide new insights into existing data and sees himself leveraging new technologies to improve the business process. Outside of accounting, Bryon works with the Air Cadet Program in the Canadian Armed Forces — he got his pilot licence before his driver’s licence.

Originally from China, Xue chose to pursue a CPA designation as she wanted to familiarize herself with the “language of business.” A lover of books, movies, and fine arts, she aspires to work in a career that appeals to her creative side. Xue is confident her designation will provide her with an understanding of the business perspective of any job.

Her career goal is to continue working in the accounting industry and to eventually move into a position where she is overseeing the finance department.

Anqi says that the CPA designation has provided her with the ability to problem solve in a fast-paced setting — a valuable skill to have as she progresses in her career. Inspired by her peers at both school and work, Anqi is motivated to achieve her dreams. Previously a lifeguard, these days Anqi spends less time in the water and more time in the woods, hiking.

A self-professed Lego fan, David enjoys collecting Lego modular buildings.

Outside of work, this snowmobile enthusiast enjoys spending time at her family cottage — especially in the winter.

Jannie cites her parents as her main source of inspiration and enjoys watching movies and trying new restaurants outside of work.

In Alex’s opinion, a company’s numbers tell its story, and he pursued his CPA designation because he enjoys using a financial lens to look at how a business runs. Choosing the CPA designation has helped Alex change the way he approaches problems and presents solutions, skills that will enable him to become more involved in the business side of things. Annie is interested in identifying and executing growth opportunities that will directly impact the business and believes the CPA designation provides her with the technical background for understanding key business drivers. Incredibly, Annie can solve a Rubik’s Cube in less than 40 seconds, and says her parents are the main source of her inspiration.

Shannon Vanessa Smith

Shannon Smith earned a Bachelor of Accounting and Financial Management and a Master of Accounting from the University of Waterloo. An Ottawa native, she returned to her hometown to work for GGFL LLP, where she is the first staff member to have graduated in the top one per cent in Canada. Shannon views her CPA designation as an asset when it comes to future career opportunities and looks forward to working in a variety of roles that challenge her to think in different ways while providing value to her clients. A “high performance” synchronized swimmer in high school, Shannon competed with her home club across Canada, in addition to competing internationally as part of Team Ontario.

It was Lily’s accounting teacher in high school who led her to becoming a CPA. Hearing her teacher talk about her previous experience working at Deloitte, Lily yearned to work in a similar environment surrounded by ambitious individuals like herself. Lily’s ambition is balanced by interests that include oil painting, creating digital art, and playing video games.

In Jim’s opinion, CPAs have a strong reputation for leadership, and he is confident that his designation will help him become a leader in private accounting, public accounting or government. Outside of work, Jim enjoys watching football and baseball and is a huge New York Yankees fan.

She currently works for PwC LLP in Toronto and sees a career in taxation in her future. Helen pursued a CPA designation since it’s a highly recognized designation in the professional world, and she was pleased to learn she had made the Honour Roll. Helen says she is inspired by food, and her main interest outside of work is listening to music.

In his opinion, the CPA designation will open up many doors and help him fulfil his dreams. At the office, Allen enjoys working in a close-knit team and aims to work in similar environments in the future; at home, he enjoys taking care of his dog and playing video games.

Born in Switzerland and raised in Dryden, Ontario, Kim Wildhaber earned an Honours Bachelor of Commerce at Lakehead University. Kim returned to Dryden to work at BDO LLP. He chose to become a CPA to give himself more opportunities in both career development and job variety. He aims to progress in his career by continuing to expand his knowledge and eventually sees himself providing business solutions or moving into a managerial role. Outside of work, Kim enjoys spending time outdoors — playing hockey, soccer, and fishing.

Kenneth believes his CPA designation has equipped him with diverse technical skills and enabling competencies that will be useful in all stages of his career. One of Kenneth’s hobbies is recording and producing music — a passion of his that most people don’t know about.

In Macy’s opinion, a CPA designation is a valuable asset that will enhance her career and provide her with limitless opportunities. When it comes to her career goals, she sees herself managing the accounting function of an organization. When it comes to her interests, Macy enjoys watching movies and playing board games with friends.
